St. Porphyrius left his home in Macedonia and went to live among the monks of Scete in Egypt. After five years, he left to go to Palestine to see the Holy land and ended up living in a cave for five years near the Jordan. He was kind of tricked against his will into becoming the Bishop of Gaza after he prayed and cured himself completely of a disease.
St. Gabriel was born in Assisi and named Francis after St. Francis. After he was miraculously cured of two illnesses he decided to devote himself to God. He died of TB at age 24. He didn’t work any miracles in his lifetime, but there are a lot attributed to his tomb.

When we think of achieving great holiness by doing little things with love and grace, Therese of Lisieux comes first to mind. Like her, Gabriel died painfully from tuberculosis. Together they urge us to tend to the small details of daily life, to be considerate of others’ feelings every day. Our path to sanctity, like theirs, probably lies not in heroic doings but in performing small acts of kindness every day.
